A Touching Memoir of Moshir-al-Mamalek Garden
Since living in the cities located in desert has been an intricate problem for the inhabitants, the need of vitality and freshness was one of the most significant reasons to build beautiful big gardens. Yazd Moshir-al-Mamalek garden is one of them, located on the margin of the historical town, with an easy access to the entire city.
"The garden has been constructed at the end of Qajar era by Moshir-al-Mamalek Fath-Allah Khan who was in charge of tax collecting in the Ministry of Finance. He has also been the deputy of the mayor when he was away. According to Amir-Abad elderly inhabitants, once the destiny of Yazd has been made in Moshir-al_Mamalek garden. Mirza Fath-Allah Khan has done a great deal of efforts to make the city habitable and has established many qanats, any one of them equals to one village and many occupations. One of these qanats was called “Amir-Abad Moshir” which is 5 kilometers from former Shah square (present Be'sat square.) Mahmoud-Abad and Kasnavieh habitations have been established in the vicinity of this qanat." Says Mr. Nabil, hotel's directing manager, about the history of Moshir-al-Mamalek.
Fath-Allah Khan built a garden near Amir-Abad qanat and since his main career was tax collecting, this garden was converted to a depository for non-cash taxes and Moshir's private guesthouse. When he passed away, his son Mirza Taqi Khan moved to the garden and dwelled in the central mansion. He made some changes according to that era such as building a garage for his personal car and making a road from the entrance gate to the central mansion. After his death, the garden lost its thriving state and only his children who lived in Tehran occasionally came to the garden.
When the garden destroyed and its qanat dried up, Amirabad`s inhabitants dig a well (in the vicinity of Garden`s eastern wall) so the water could run in the same passage of the old qanat and keep the neighborhood alive. As Mr. Nabil says, this situation continued until the garden was bought by a private corporation called “Yazd Moshir” and with the support of Yazd Cultural Heritage Organization changed the building into a hotel. In 2004, the hotel was introduced as the first Iranian hotel garden with a traditional architecture and yet equipped by all the welfare facilities.
About the current situation of the hotel, Mr. Nabil says: "The hotel covers an area of 13,000 Sq. M. The beautiful yard of the garden, spouts, flowing spring and the original Persian architecture have made it one of Yazd Tourist attractions." Moshir-al-Mamalek Hotel Garden enjoys 80 rooms of single, double, twin, triple, and suit with 80 different traditional designs. Yet its modern facilities and amenities make it a memorable for guests place to stay.
